1905–1922

The Russian Revolution

In 1917 Russia's tsar was overthrown in the February Revolution, and in October the Bolsheviks under Lenin seized power. A civil war followed, and in 1922 the Soviet Union was formed. The revolution changed Russia, and for most of the 1900s it also shaped world politics.

Why artists painted it

Artists were part of the revolution. Posters, banners and bold new styles were used to explain the new world, while painters like Kustodiev recorded the crowds in the streets.
