Italia and Germania
Johann Friedrich Overbeck Β· 1811
Why it's great
Two young women sit side by side, holding hands, one dark-haired and one blonde, as symbols of Italy and Germany. Overbeck painted two close friends, representing a friendship between their nations. The soft colors and delicate lines are like those of the Italian Renaissance. It's a picture of friendship.
