The Deposition from the Cross
Pontormo Β· 1525
Why it's great
Friends in pale pink, blue and green carry Christ's body in a swirling, floating group, with no ground or cross in sight. Pontormo painted it in 1525, and it is one of the most striking pictures of the Mannerist style.
