The Virgin in Prayer
Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato Β· 1640
Why it's great
Mary, in a dark blue cloak, bows her head and clasps her hands in prayer, against a plain background. Sassoferrato painted it in about 1640, and the deep blue color, made from lapis lazuli, is rich.
