Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
New Zealand's national museum on the Wellington waterfront shows Māori treasures, the nation's natural history and art in a very hands-on way.
History of the museum
Te Papa was formed in 1992 by combining the National Museum and the National Art Gallery, and opened at its current site in 1998. Its name means 'our place' in Māori, and Māori leaders have a say in the care of their taonga.
