Antiochus and Stratonice
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres · 1840
Why it's great
A prince lies sick in bed, but a doctor discovers the cause: he's in love with his father's young wife, and his father, the king, looks on. In the story, the king gave her up for his son's sake. Ingres painted it with a lot of detail. It's a story about kindness and sacrifice.

Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was born in Montauban, in southern France, and trained under David in Paris. He spent many years in Italy and in the end died in Paris. He believed in the power of clean, elegant outlines and was a master of portraits. He was also a fine violin player, and the phrase 'Ingres's violin' came to mean a talented hobby.
