The Girlhood of Mary Virgin
Dante Gabriel Rossetti Β· 1848
Why it's great
A young Mary sits embroidering a lily as her mother, Anne, watches in a quiet room, with a vine outside. Rossetti painted this when he was 20, one of the first Pre-Raphaelite pictures. Every object has a symbolic meaning. It's an early, important work.
