The Destruction of Sodom And Gomorrah
John Martin Β· 1852
Why it's great
Fire rains from a stormy sky over a city of towers while tiny figures flee across a bridge. John Martin painted spectacular disasters from the Bible that thrilled huge crowds in Victorian England. His giant scenes were like the movies of their day. It's a famous piece of apocalyptic art.

John Martin was born in Northumberland, England, and made huge, dramatic paintings of disasters from the Bible and history. His work was hugely popular in London in the 1820s and 1830s, as thrilling as a movie. He also designed engineering schemes for his city. He died on the Isle of Man in 1854.
