Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna
Frederic Leighton Β· 1854
Why it's great
A crowd walks in a festive parade through the streets of Florence, as the people marvel at a new painting of Mary carried in a procession. In the story, the painter Cimabue's work was so beautiful that the city celebrated. Leighton painted it when he was 24. Queen Victoria bought it, making him famous.
