Flaming June
Frederic Leighton Β· 1895
Why it's great
A young woman in a glowing orange dress is curled up asleep in a sunny courtyard, with the sea behind her. Leighton used the vivid color to suggest the heat of summer. For years the painting was forgotten and even sold cheaply, and then rediscovered. Today it's one of the most loved Victorian paintings, and it now hangs in a museum in Puerto Rico.

Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough, England, and traveled across Europe as a child, speaking several languages. He became a leading Victorian painter of classical subjects and was President of the Royal Academy. He was the first British artist to be made a baron. His house in London is now a museum.
