Anxiety
Edvard Munch Β· 1894
Why it's great
A crowd of people with ghostly faces walk toward us under a blood-red sky on a bridge. Munch made this just after his most famous painting, The Scream, with similar colors. The mood is one of unease. It's a picture of worry that many people recognize.

Edvard Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Christiania (now Oslo), in a family troubled by illness and loss. He traveled in Europe, especially Germany and France, and used paint to express anxiety, love and loneliness. His most famous work, 'The Scream', is among the best-known images ever. He spent his last decades at his estate Ekely near Oslo and died in 1944.
