Inger on the Beach
Edvard Munch · 1889
Why it's great
A young woman in a white dress sits by the shore, looking out, with her hair in the breeze. Munch painted his sister Inger at the seaside in Norway. The peaceful mood is a contrast with his later, anxious paintings. It's a tender early portrait.

Edvard Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Christiania (now Oslo), in a family troubled by illness and loss. He traveled in Europe, especially Germany and France, and used paint to express anxiety, love and loneliness. His most famous work, 'The Scream', is among the best-known images ever. He spent his last decades at his estate Ekely near Oslo and died in 1944.
