Night in Saint-Cloud
Edvard Munch Β· 1890
Why it's great
A man sits in a dark room by a window, with the blue of a night glowing behind him. Edvard Munch painted it in 1890, at a time when he was living in France and mourning his father. The strong blue shapes make a quiet, lonely feeling. It's an early work that shows the mood of his later art.

Edvard Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Christiania (now Oslo), in a family troubled by illness and loss. He traveled in Europe, especially Germany and France, and used paint to express anxiety, love and loneliness. His most famous work, 'The Scream', is among the best-known images ever. He spent his last decades at his estate Ekely near Oslo and died in 1944.
