Evening on Karl Johan
Edvard Munch Β· 1892
Why it's great
A crowd of people in dark clothes, with pale, mask-like faces, walks toward us along a main street in Oslo, with a single man going the other way. Munch painted the feeling of being alone in a crowd. The strange lights make it eerie. It's an early step toward his famous anxiety paintings.

Edvard Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Christiania (now Oslo), in a family troubled by illness and loss. He traveled in Europe, especially Germany and France, and used paint to express anxiety, love and loneliness. His most famous work, 'The Scream', is among the best-known images ever. He spent his last decades at his estate Ekely near Oslo and died in 1944.
