The Demon Seated
Mikhail Vrubel Β· 1890
Why it's great
A brooding, sad winged demon sits in a mountain landscape, with eyes full of longing. Vrubel was inspired by a poem by Lermontov. The faceted, mosaic-like paint looks like jewels. It became a great symbol of Russian art.

Mikhail Vrubel was born in Omsk, Siberia, and studied in Saint Petersburg. He lived in Russia and Ukraine, creating glittering, mosaic-like paintings and designs for theaters. He is best known for paintings of the Demon, a moody figure from a Russian poem. He lost his sight in later life and died in Saint Petersburg in 1910.
