State Tretyakov Gallery
The national gallery of Russian art, in a fairy-tale building in Moscow, holds the best of Russian painting, including Repin, Shishkin, Vrubel and Malevich's original Black Square.
History of the museum
The Moscow merchant Pavel Tretyakov began buying Russian paintings in 1856 and decided to give them to the city. In 1892 he donated his collection of about 1,300 paintings, and the gallery opened to the public. Tretyakov's house was rebuilt with the folk-style facade by Viktor Vasnetsov. After the revolution it became a state museum.
