National Museum in Warsaw
Poland's biggest art museum has Polish painting from the Middle Ages to today, with Jan Matejko's giant Battle of Grunwald, and also works from ancient Egypt and Europe.
History of the museum
The museum was founded in 1862 while Poland was divided among foreign powers, as a place where Polish culture could be shown. Its modern building opened in 1938, but in the Second World War the Nazis looted and destroyed much of the collection. After the war many works were recovered, and the museum has restored Matejko's Battle of Grunwald, one of the largest paintings in Poland.
