Christ preaching at Capernaum
Maurycy Gottlieb · 1878
Why it's great
Jesus speaks to a crowd in Capernaum, with Jewish listeners gathered around him. Maurycy Gottlieb, a Jewish painter, imagined Jesus as a Jewish teacher in a Jewish town. He painted it in the last year of his life. It shows how a Jewish artist could look at a Gospel story as part of his own culture.
