Saint Eulalia
John William Waterhouse ยท 1885
Why it's great
A young woman lies in the snow with a white dove rising from her lips, as a group of people gather at the back. Saint Eulalia was a young Christian girl from Spain who was martyred, according to legend. Waterhouse painted her peaceful face as the dove symbolizes her spirit. It is a haunting picture of courage.
