Guanyin riding the dragon
Harada Naojirō · 1890
Why it's great
A calm Buddhist figure, Guanyin, stands on a roaring dragon above clouds and waves. Harada Naojirō was a Japanese artist who studied in Germany and painted in the Western style. The painting mixes ancient Asian subjects with modern oil painting. It's a striking meeting of East and West.
