Sleep and his Half-brother Death

John William Waterhouse Β· 1874

Why it's great

Two winged brothers from Greek myth, Sleep and Death, lie side by side on a bed of poppies, in a quiet, dreamy pose. Waterhouse painted them in a haze of purple and gold. Sleep is the one who clutches a poppy. It's a peaceful picture of a serious subject.
