Le Pont de l'Europe
Gustave Caillebotte · 1876
Why it's great
A tall iron bridge crosses a train station, with a man in a top hat looking over the rail. Caillebotte painted the new Paris of steel and steam. The perspective lines pull you into the picture. It's one of the first paintings about industry and the city.

Gustave Caillebotte was born into a wealthy Paris family and trained as a lawyer and engineer before painting. He was an Impressionist, but his pictures often show unusual high or low perspectives of the modern city. He generously used his money to support his friends, buying their paintings. He lived near Paris and died in Gennevilliers at 45.
