The Red Roofs, Côte Saint-Denis at Pontoise, Winter Effect
Camille Pissarro · 1877
Why it's great
A village with red roofs sits on a hill, behind bare trees, in the winter. Camille Pissarro painted the peaceful French village with a careful eye. The warm roofs stand out against the cold. It's a beautiful winter scene.

Camille Pissarro was born on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean and moved to France as a teen. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and a father figure and teacher to many younger painters, including Cézanne. He painted farms, villages and city streets in France. He died in Paris in 1903. Pissarro came from a Sephardic Jewish family, and his background shaped his lifelong sympathy for ordinary working people.
