Evening in Ukraine
Arkhip Kuindzhi · 1878
Why it's great
Whitewashed cottages glow with the last red rays of the setting sun, as the dusk covers the fields. Kuindzhi painted the village in warm and cool light. The shining color made visitors gasp. It's a famous glowing landscape.

Arkhip Kuindzhi was born in a poor family in the Mariupol area of Ukraine and trained in Saint Petersburg. He was famous for using light in his landscapes to create a nearly glowing effect, as in his moonlit nights. He lived in Saint Petersburg, where he taught and gave money to young artists. He died there in 1910.
