Ukrainian Night
Arkhip Kuindzhi Β· 1876
Why it's great
White huts glow in the moonlight by a stream, in a deep blue night under a starry sky. Kuindzhi painted the glowing moon so brightly that people thought there was a lamp behind it. The silvery light is magical. It's a favorite Ukrainian landscape.

Arkhip Kuindzhi was born in a poor family in the Mariupol area of Ukraine and trained in Saint Petersburg. He was famous for using light in his landscapes to create a nearly glowing effect, as in his moonlit nights. He lived in Saint Petersburg, where he taught and gave money to young artists. He died there in 1910.
