Flooding at Port-Marly
Alfred Sisley · 1876
Why it's great
The river has overflowed and covers the road in front of a wine merchant's shop, as a boat floats in the street. Sisley painted the flood in the cool gray light. The reflections are lovely. It's a beautiful look at a natural disaster.

Alfred Sisley was born in Paris to English parents and was one of the key Impressionist painters. He painted quiet landscapes along the Seine River and in small villages near Paris. He lived most of his life in France but remained a British citizen. He died in Moret-sur-Loing in 1899.
