La Rue Montorgueil

Claude Monet · 1878

Why it's great

A Paris street is jammed with waving flags and a sea of tiny dabs of color, on the day of a national holiday in 1878. Monet painted the celebration from a balcony, with fast strokes that capture the excitement. The flags seem to flutter. It's one of the most joyful pictures of a city.

About the artist

Claude Monet

1840–1926 · born in Paris · died in Giverny

Claude Monet was born in Paris but grew up on the coast of Normandy, where he learned to paint outdoors. He was a leader of Impressionism, and he lived in places like Argenteuil and, for his last 43 years, Giverny, where he built a famous garden with a pond of water lilies. He painted the same scenes again and again at different times of day to capture changing light. He kept painting until he was 86, even as his eyesight faded.
