Morning, An Overcast Day, Rouen
Camille Pissarro · 1896
Why it's great
A bridge and the river in Rouen are wrapped in gray morning mist, with boats and buildings in soft shades of silver. Pissarro painted Rouen from hotel windows in the 1890s. The scene shows how he could make an ordinary cloudy day beautiful. It's one of his many city views from his last years.

Camille Pissarro was born on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean and moved to France as a teen. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and a father figure and teacher to many younger painters, including Cézanne. He painted farms, villages and city streets in France. He died in Paris in 1903. Pissarro came from a Sephardic Jewish family, and his background shaped his lifelong sympathy for ordinary working people.
