Amalienborg Square, Copenhagen
Vilhelm Hammershøi · 1896
Why it's great
The palace square in Copenhagen is nearly empty, in the gray light, with the statue in the center. Vilhelm Hammershøi, a Danish painter, painted quiet, still scenes in muted colors. His pictures feel like holding your breath. It's a calm view of a royal place.
