Pont Boieldieu in Rouen, Rainy Weather
Camille Pissarro · 1896
Why it's great
A busy city bridge crosses a river in the rain, with umbrellas, wagons and gray sky. Pissarro painted it from a hotel window in Rouen, France. The wet gray colors reflect the weather. It's a lively picture of everyday life in the rain.

Camille Pissarro was born on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean and moved to France as a teen. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and a father figure and teacher to many younger painters, including Cézanne. He painted farms, villages and city streets in France. He died in Paris in 1903. Pissarro came from a Sephardic Jewish family, and his background shaped his lifelong sympathy for ordinary working people.
