Art Gallery of Ontario
Toronto's art gallery has a spiral staircase and a glass front designed by Frank Gehry, a big Canadian collection including Tom Thomson's West Wind, and the world's largest public collection of Henry Moore sculptures.
History of the museum
It began in 1900 as the Art Museum of Toronto and became the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1919 and, in 1966, the Art Gallery of Ontario. Its first building was the Grange, an old mansion, and the gallery grew around it. In 2008 the architect Frank Gehry, who was born in Toronto, completed a big redesign. Its famous Canadian paintings came in part from Group of Seven supporters like J. S. McLean.
