Cleveland Museum of Art
A free museum with one of the finest collections in the Midwest, from ancient Egypt to Monet, with a very strong collection of Asian art and Old Masters. Its marble building sits beside a lagoon in University Circle.
History of the museum
Cleveland's industrialists left money for the museum in their wills in 1913, and the Greek-style marble building on a hill above Wade Lagoon opened in 1916. Its early directors were determined to buy only top-quality works. Admission has been free since the museum opened. In 2008 the museum began a huge rebuilding and expansion that brought a new glass atrium.
