Detroit Institute of Arts
The DIA is famous for Diego Rivera's huge murals about Detroit's factories, painted straight on the walls of its central court, and for a fine collection that includes Van Gogh and Bruegel.
History of the museum
The museum started in 1885 when Detroit citizens founded the Detroit Museum of Art, and its current Beaux-Arts building opened in 1927. In 1932 and 1933 the Mexican artist Diego Rivera spent months painting the Detroit Industry murals, a salute to the city's car workers. When the city of Detroit went bankrupt in 2013, there was a danger that the art might be sold, but donors raised money to protect it in the 'Grand Bargain'.
