Scene in the Northwest: Portrait of John Henry Lefroy
Paul Kane · 1845
Why it's great
A British officer and scientist, John Henry Lefroy, stands in a winter landscape in the Canadian northwest, dressed in a warm fur coat, with sled dogs. Paul Kane met him on his trip across Canada. Lefroy was studying the earth's magnetism. It's a famous Canadian portrait of the fur trade era.
