Self-Portrait with a Black Dog
Gustave Courbet · 1842
Why it's great
A young Courbet sits in the countryside with his dog, leaning against a rock, looking out with confidence. He painted this when he was 23. The dark landscape gives the picture a moody feeling. It's an early display of his talent.

Gustave Courbet was born in Ornans, in eastern France, and moved to Paris to become an artist. He led the Realism movement, insisting on painting real people and real life instead of myths. He was outspoken and got into political trouble, and he fled to Switzerland in the end. He died there in 1877.
