After Dinner at Ornans
Gustave Courbet Β· 1848
Why it's great
A group of men sit relaxed around a table in a warm room after dinner, one of them playing a violin. Courbet painted his friends and his father in a dark, calm space. The painting won him a medal and was bought by the state. It's the start of his fame.

Gustave Courbet was born in Ornans, in eastern France, and moved to Paris to become an artist. He led the Realism movement, insisting on painting real people and real life instead of myths. He was outspoken and got into political trouble, and he fled to Switzerland in the end. He died there in 1877.
