Majas on the Balcony

Francisco Goya Β· 1850

Why it's great

Two young women in fancy dress lean on a balcony as two men in dark cloaks lurk behind, in the shadows. Goya painted the scene of old Madrid, full of mystery. The bright dresses glow in the shade. It's a well-known painting.

About the artist

Francisco Goya

1746–1828 Β· born in Fuendetodos Β· died in Bordeaux

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
