Don Manuel Osorio de Zuniga
Francisco Goya Β· 1787
Why it's great
A little boy in a bright red suit holds a string tied to a pet magpie, while three cats watch with wide, hungry eyes. Goya painted him as a small child of a noble family. The cats lurk in the shadows, a hint at danger. It's among the most charming and beloved portraits of a child.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
