Portrait of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire

Thomas Gainsborough Β· 1785

Why it's great

A fashionable woman in a huge feathered hat, with a graceful, relaxed look, turns toward us in a soft light. Georgiana was one of the most famous figures in English society. Gainsborough painted her with loose strokes.

About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough

1727–1788 Β· born in Sudbury Β· died in London

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, a small town in England, and moved to London as a teenager to study art. He became one of Britain's most fashionable portrait painters, working in Bath and London. He secretly preferred painting landscapes, and he loved music. His elegant, feathery brushstrokes made his sitters seem alive.
