The Family of the Infante Don Luis
Francisco Goya Β· 1783
Why it's great
A prince and his family are gathered around a card table in a candlelit room, with servants and a painter in the corner. Goya painted himself on the left, almost at the prince's feet. It's a daring and informal royal portrait. It's one of his earliest great family paintings.

Francisco Goya was born in a small village in Spain and became the court painter to the Spanish kings in Madrid. After an illness left him deaf in his forties, his art grew darker and more personal. He witnessed war and cruelty and made powerful pictures about it. He spent his last years in Bordeaux, France, and is seen as a bridge between old masters and modern art.
