Mr and Mrs William Hallett ('The Morning Walk')

Thomas Gainsborough Β· 1785

Why it's great

A young couple strolls through a feathery woodland, in elegant clothes, with a little dog. Gainsborough painted a glorious sense of movement and light. The fabric seems to flutter in the breeze. It's one of the most graceful portraits.

About the artist

Thomas Gainsborough

1727–1788 Β· born in Sudbury Β· died in London

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, a small town in England, and moved to London as a teenager to study art. He became one of Britain's most fashionable portrait painters, working in Bath and London. He secretly preferred painting landscapes, and he loved music. His elegant, feathery brushstrokes made his sitters seem alive.
