Mr and Mrs Andrews
Thomas Gainsborough Β· 1748
Why it's great
A young landowner and his wife pose proudly in their own fields in Suffolk, England, as if showing off their land. Gainsborough painted this when he was only 21, and it features crops and sheep as well as the couple. It is one of the most famous English portraits. It's also a record of how people showed off their wealth.

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, a small town in England, and moved to London as a teenager to study art. He became one of Britain's most fashionable portrait painters, working in Bath and London. He secretly preferred painting landscapes, and he loved music. His elegant, feathery brushstrokes made his sitters seem alive.
