The Market Cart

Thomas Gainsborough Β· 1786

Why it's great

A cart full of farm produce rolls down a country road as a couple of travelers pass, under a cloudy sky. Gainsborough painted the glow of evening light on the trees. The landscape is soft and feathery. It's a favorite of English country scenes.

Thomas Gainsborough

1727–1788 Β· born in Sudbury Β· died in London

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, a small town in England, and moved to London as a teenager to study art. He became one of Britain's most fashionable portrait painters, working in Bath and London. He secretly preferred painting landscapes, and he loved music. His elegant, feathery brushstrokes made his sitters seem alive.
