A View through Three of the North-Western Arches of the Third Storey of the Coliseum
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg Β· 1815
Why it's great
The huge stone arches of the Colosseum in Rome frame a sunlit view of the city. Eckersberg, a Danish painter, painted it on a visit to Italy. The light and the shadow on the stone are exact. It's a classic Danish painting.
