Thun Panorama

Marquard Wocher Β· 1810

Why it's great

A huge circular painting shows the whole view of the town of Thun in Switzerland and the surrounding Alps, as if you are standing in the middle. Marquard Wocher painted this panorama in 1814, and it is one of the oldest surviving panorama paintings in the world. People used to stand in a special building and turn around to see all of it. It's an early kind of virtual reality.
