Mountain Landscape with Rainbow

Caspar David Friedrich Β· 1809

Why it's great

A rainbow glows over a misty mountain valley, with a cross on a rock. Friedrich painted nature as something sacred. The soft, delicate light makes it feel peaceful. It's an early example of his Romantic style.

About the artist

Caspar David Friedrich

1774–1840 Β· born in Greifswald Β· died in Dresden

Caspar David Friedrich was born in the Baltic port of Greifswald, Germany, and later settled in Dresden. He painted quiet, mysterious landscapes of mountains, fog, ruins, and seashores, often with a tiny figure seen from behind. He believed nature was a way of feeling something divine. He became a hero of German Romanticism, though he was nearly forgotten for decades before being rediscovered.
