Episode of the September Days 1830, on the Grand Place of Brussels
Gustaaf Wappers Β· 1835
Why it's great
Fighters in the Belgian Revolution of 1830 rush across the Grand Place in Brussels, flags flying, with a wounded man on the ground. Gustaaf Wappers painted the dramatic and patriotic scene five years after the revolution. It helped inspire Belgians as they built a new country. It's a big Romantic history painting.
