The Execution of Lady Jane Grey
Paul Delaroche Β· 1833
Why it's great
A blindfolded young queen feels for the block as she is about to be beheaded. Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days in 1553 and was only a teenager. Delaroche painted the moment with a hush that makes it moving. When it was shown in 1834, crowds were moved to tears.
