The Arrest of Diepo Negoro by Lieutenant-General Baron De Kock
Nicolaas Pieneman Β· 1830
Why it's great
In 1830 the Javanese prince Diponegoro was arrested by the Dutch after a long war, as his people looked on. The Dutch painter Pieneman showed the prince calm and proud, but the picture is told from the Dutch side. Years later, the Indonesian artist Raden Saleh painted his own version of the arrest, so the two paintings show how one event can look very different depending on who tells the story.
