Daytime cycle: The Evening

Caspar David Friedrich Β· 1821

Why it's great

A distant mountain valley darkens in the evening, with small figures, a church spire and a fence. Friedrich painted a quiet end to the day. The calm colors of the sky are lovely. It's a peaceful landscape.

About the artist

Caspar David Friedrich

1774–1840 Β· born in Greifswald Β· died in Dresden

Caspar David Friedrich was born in the Baltic port of Greifswald, Germany, and later settled in Dresden. He painted quiet, mysterious landscapes of mountains, fog, ruins, and seashores, often with a tiny figure seen from behind. He believed nature was a way of feeling something divine. He became a hero of German Romanticism, though he was nearly forgotten for decades before being rediscovered.
